Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon

Shwedagon, said to be 2,600 years old and therefore the world’s oldest pagoda, is Burma’s most sacred site. It’s massive, glittering, gilded stupa dominates the skyline of Yangon, causing one to pause every time it comes into view. Conveniently located near our hotel, we visited it twice, once during the day and once at night. Both times, Shwedagon was equally mystifying. Merle said, “It’s like Disneyland for Buddhas,” and indeed it is. This was one of our favorite places in Burma.
